Mount Koya (Koya-san) is one of the most spiritual places we have ever visited, and we continue to return here as much as possible. It is a
UNESCO World Heritage Site for a very good reason! Since 800 AD it has been the epicenter of the
Shingon sect of
Japanese Buddhism. The small town is about 800 m above sea-level sitting between 8 peeks forested by beautiful massive trees. There are about 120 temples set in the valley and many offer traditional Japanese accommodation (roykans) with typical (and very good) vegetarian monk food (
Shojin Ryori and Kansha). Note that some Roykans can be very luxurious and include traditional spas (onsens). Of note is also the VERY unique train which rises up the seep mountain through the forest, almost worth coming here just to experience!
